As winter approaches, heating bills can quickly become a major expense for Wisconsin households. However, with a few simple steps, you can reduce your heating costs and still stay warm through the coldest months. Here’s how:

  1. Seal Gaps and Cracks

Drafty windows and doors can let heat escape. Use weatherstripping, caulk, or door sweeps to seal gaps and cracks. Even small leaks can make your heating system work overtime.

  1. Adjust Your Thermostat

Lowering your thermostat by just a few degrees can make a significant difference. Programmable or smart thermostats make it easy to manage these adjustments automatically.

  1. Optimize Your Heating System

Make sure your furnace is running efficiently by scheduling a tune-up before the winter months. Clean or replace your furnace filter regularly, as dirty filters reduce airflow, making the system work harder and consume more energy. Also, check that your vents aren’t blocked by furniture or curtains, ensuring the heat circulates effectively.

  1. Add Insulation

If your home’s insulation is insufficient, especially in the attic, heat can easily escape. Investing in additional insulation can pay off by keeping your home warmer in the winter (and cooler in the summer) while cutting energy costs.

  1. Take Advantage of Sunlight

During sunny winter days, open your curtains and blinds to let natural heat in. Once the sun sets, close them to keep the warmth inside.

  1. Use Space Heaters Strategically

If you spend most of your time in a few rooms, consider using space heaters rather than heating the entire home. Just be sure to follow safety guidelines and avoid leaving them unattended.

  1. Dress for Warmth Indoors

Instead of cranking up the heat, bundle up in cozy layers while at home. Keep blankets handy for extra warmth during chilly evenings.

  1. Take Advantage of Utility Programs

Many Wisconsin utilities offer energy-saving programs or rebates for home improvements, such as insulation upgrades or smart thermostats. Check with your utility company or visit Focus on Energy to learn more!

By following these simple steps, you can significantly reduce your heating costs this winter while staying comfortable. Small changes can make a big impact, helping to lower your heating bills and reduce your overall energy use, saving you money!
