2021 was a year of transformation for CUB and a year of racking up additional savings for you the customers of Wisconsin utilities.

The Citizens Utility Board annual report for 2021 is out and can be viewed online here or by clicking on the photo of below.

The report highlights accomplishments for CUB in 2021, including passage of Act 24 that modernized the nonpartisan nonprofit organization’s funding model and enabled an expansion of the regulatory team working on behalf of customers.

CUB appreciates the support from utility stakeholders, the Public Service Commission and lawmakers that led to unanimous legislative support for Act 24, which Gov. Evers signed into law in April 2021.

When it comes to PSC cases decided last year, our work helped achieve $97 million in savings from what utilities sought. Unfortunately, surging natural gas costs and capital costs for utilities led some customers to see higher electric bills in January 2022.

But we’re confident that with our expanded regulatory team, led by Corey Singletary and now including General Counsel Cara Coburn Faris and Regulatory Strategist Steve Kihm, that we can achieve more savings for you in the years ahead.

The $97 million in savings last year brings to nearly $500 million CUB’s savings for customers in just the past four years. CUB’s efforts have helped save more than $3.7 billion since 2006.

Other highlights you’ll see as you page through the annual report:

  • CUB’s work on affordability and equity is making strides in negotiations with utilities, discussions with stakeholders. The PSC. Move to require utilities to submit household energy burden data – something CUB has sought for years – is just one example.
  • Our recap of key 2021 highlights the rate cases involving three major utilities and important wins achieved for customers.
  • Our outreach is expanding with the CUB Tracks video and podcast as well as a series of 2022 webinars for residential and small business customers.

I invite you to check out the annual report for yourself. And please consider renewing your CUB membership or becoming a member today. Thank you.
